The Jericho Athletic Association Basketball rules for girls have been modified to be more closely aligned to other leagues that many of our children participate in. The following rules will apply to the Girls Program.
NCAA Rules govern league play for girls.
Girls have the 10-second rule in effect
3rd & 4th grade girls use a shorter foul line (12 feet)
3rd & 4th grade girls have 8 periods of 3 and ½ minutes per period
Grid to be presented to the official prior to start of game
There is no half-time
5th & 6th grade girls have 8 periods of 4 minutes per period
Grid must be used for game and presented to the table (score keeper) prior to the game. If grid is not presented on time, a 2 shot technical will be assessed at the beginning of game plus the team will get the ball to start the game. If both teams do not present their grids, then a jump ball will start the period.
The next team to start period according to grid should line up immediately after end of the last period. One minute to line up team at start of the next period. Any delay will give the ball to the other team to start the period.
There is no half-time.
One 2-minute overtime. If still tied, play until one point is scored (league play only)
Running time, except for shooting foul shots, and the last minute of the fourth quarter and overtime (5th & 6th grade only).
a. Play man-to-man only, no zone, no double team. If a team plays zone, coach gets a warning. If it occurs again, technical on coach – 2 shots and the ball.
b. No steals in backcourt.
c. As soon as the defensive team gains control/possession of the ball in the backcourt, the Team now on defense must drop back to the half court line and pick up their opponent as the offensive team brings the ball into the frontcourt.
a. Any type of defense (man-to-man, zone, full court press); however, no more than two players may guard an opponent at any one time.
1. No one player can play more than one quarter than any other teammate for that game.
2. No one player can score more then 15 points during the regular game. (Does not apply to overtime)
3. Matching players at the beginning of each quarter is permitted as long as the process takes less then one minute. The team that is not ready will be assessed a technical foul.
4. Only the designated head coach can stand and address the official. Any other bench coach cannot stand or address the official. A warning, followed by a technical will be charged to the head coach.
5. Any player, who misses two practices in a row, will not be eligible to play in the game following the second missed practice (Exceptions to be made only by the League's Commissioner).
8. Substitutions allowed on foul shots and time outs (5th & 6th Grade only).
9. Each team has four 30-second time outs for the game (5th & 6th Grade only), and one time out during overtime.
